The tournament is named after the late Milton W. “Scotty” Wood, whose relationship with the Muhlenberg basketball team in the late 1940s led to his founding what would become Wood Dining Services, now partnered with Sodexo.

Both Muhlenberg teams reclaimed the Scotty Wood title in 2013 after falling in the championship game the previous year.

The Mule women have won eight of the last 11 Scotty Wood championships, and two of the three times they didn’t, Scranton won it. The two teams could meet again in the championship game if they get past their first-round opponents.

Muhlenberg, which opened the season with a last-second loss to Moravian, begins with an Albertus Magnus team that it defeated, 80-68, last year in New Haven, Conn. Albertus will bring an extremely young team (seven freshmen and no seniors on the roster) to Allentown. The Mules were 16-10 a year ago, while the Falcons, who opened with an 85-67 win against Mitchell, were 5-20.

The other women’s first-round game will feature a reunion of former Mules on the coaching staffs. Wilkes head coach Chris Heery was an assistant at Muhlenberg for six years, while assistant coaches Kim Mui of Wilkes and Sheila Cook of Scranton played for the Mules and were teammates for three years. Scranton was 26-4 last year and 1-0 this season, and Wilkes won its opener after going 6-19 last year.

The Muhlenberg men open up the Scotty Wood Tournament with Cairn – formerly known as Philadelphia Biblical – for the third time since 2001. The Mules (16-10 last season) began their season by winning two close games against Albright and Arcadia at the Centennial/MAC Challenge last weekend. Cairn, 2-23 last year, opens at Stevenson tonight.

The other first-round game matches two teams from opposite sides of the MAC, FDU-Florham (13-12 last year, 0-1 this year) from the Freedom and Widener (14-11, 1-1) from the Commonwealth. Widener, which averaged 83.0 points per game last year, is making its first Scotty Wood Tournament appearance since winning the title in 1986.
