Timothy Sparta

Sparta is the first Muhlenberg player to score two goals in a game this season.

Sophomore Timothy Sparta scored two goals as the Muhlenberg men’s soccer team blanked McDaniel, 4-0, in its final home game of the season.

The win enabled the Mules (10-6, 4-2) to avenge their two losses to the Green Terror (5-6-2, 1-4-1) last year, including one in the Centennial Conference playoffs. Muhlenberg has reached double digits in wins for 16 of the last 17 seasons.

The match was scoreless (thanks to freshman Jose Ramirez, who headed a McDaniel shot out of the goal) before the Mules exploded for three goals in the final seven minutes of the first half. Sparta opened the floodgates with a straight-on blast from 35 yards out. Just 46 seconds later, Michael Hochkeppel, one of six Muhlenberg seniors playing his last home game, had his low shot from outside the box deflect off a McDaniel defender and into the net.

In the final minute of the half, junior Evan Smallwood set up sophomore Nick Richardson for a one-on-one with a long through ball. Richardson finished for his first career goal.

Sparta converted a feed from junior Justin Henning early in the second half, giving himself his first career multiple-goal game and the Mules a season high in goals.

Sophomore Chris Davis and junior Brendon McKeown combined for five saves and the shutout.
