The Muhlenberg football team is ranked 31st in Division III in the first American Football Coaches Association poll of the 2002 season. The ranking is the highest ever for the Mules.

Muhlenberg received 103 points after beginning the season with wins against Kings Point (54-3) and Cal Lutheran (40-32). Three other Centennial Conference schools are represented in the poll: McDaniel is 26th with 150 points, while Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall received 22 and seven points, respectively.

The Mule football team also shows up four times in the first Division III statistical rankings of the season. The team is tied for ninth in scoring (47.0 points per game) and tied for 20th in turnover margin (+2.0 per game), and senior kicker Chris Reed is tied for second in field goals (3.0 per game) and tied for 22nd in scoring (14.0 points per game).

Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 24 Arcadia

The Arcadia men’s soccer team, ranked 24th in Division III, scored an early goal and held on defeat Muhlenberg, 1-0.

Although they were outshot, 20-10, the Mules (4-3) played even with the Knights (6-1) for most of the night. Arcadia, which has won 30 of its last 31 regular-season matches, came in averaging 4.5 goals per game.

Muhlenberg is now 4-0 on the road and 0-3 at home this season. The Mules’ three losses have come to the teams ranked fourth, fifth and eighth in the region in this week’s Mid-Atlantic poll.
