A weekly look at what’s going on in the Centennial Conference:


CC play opened over the weekend with Western Maryland sweeping Swarthmore, 10-0 and 22-1, and Gettysburg sweeping Washington, 1-0 and 9-6. At 10-0, Gettysburg is off to its best start ever ... The four CC playoff teams from last year get together this weekend, as defending champion Muhlenberg travels to Gettysburg on Friday and defending regular-season champion Western Maryland hosts Ursinus on Saturday.


Johns Hopkins (12-3) has won five in a row, including a victory against Allegheny (ranked 13th in the preseason poll) ... Franklin & Marshall (10-5) scored a big win for the CC by knocking off New Jersey, 5-4 ... Ursinus was swept by Kean and is now 5-10 with four one-run losses ... Gettysburg was swept at Mary Washington to fall to 5-7 ... Western Maryland, which came home from Florida with an 8-3 record, has a big opening CC week, with games against Hopkins (Tuesday-Friday) and F&M (Saturday doubleheader).

Women’s Lacrosse

Eight-ranked Ursinus (4-0, 3-0) got a leg up on the CC playoff race by defeating No. 9 Gettysburg (4-2, 0-1), 16-11 ... In place of the cancelled Seven Sisters Tournament, Swarthmore (2-0) defeated Vassar, 14-4 ... Western Maryland (3-2) scored 13 second-half goals to hand Oneonta State it first loss, 16-14.


Defending women’s champion Swarthmore rebounded from its loss to Muhlenberg to defeat Franklin & Marshall (5-4) and Gettysburg (6-3). F&M then shut out Western Maryland, 9-0 ... The Washington men lost only five games in nine matches to blank Ursinus, 7-0, for their 65th consecutive CC win.


The Muhlenberg men’s golf team finished ninth at the York Invitational in its first tournament of the spring season.

Senior Kevin FitzPatrick and sophomore Matt Katz tied for 21st, each shooting an 81 on the par-72 Out Door Country Club course.

• Women’s golf opener postponed: The Franklin & Marshall Invitational, which was scheduled for next Monday and was to be the first women’s golf tournament of the season, was postponed until Monday, April 22. Muhlenberg is now scheduled to open up with its own Spring Classic on Monday, April 8.

• Softball rescheduled: The Muhlenberg-Moravian softball doubleheader, rained out last Tuesday, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 16.
