Muhlenberg has named Sam Beidleman interim director of athletics, effective April 1. Beidleman will serve until Muhlenberg completes its Sam Beidleman national search to replace Steve Erber, who resigned last week to become associate director of athletics at Cornell.

Beidleman returns to Muhlenberg after a prior 35-year association with the College as a student, coach, faculty member and administrator. He was a varsity letterwinner in football and track and spent 13 seasons as an assistant football coach following his graduation in 1963.

It was as a baseball coach that Beidleman truly made his mark, coaching the Mules from 1970 to 1992 and winning 255 games, which still stands as the school record for a coach in one sport. His teams captured five Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest League titles and three Southern Division championships.

After retiring from coaching, Beidleman served as full-time athletic business manager until August 2000.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Sam’s experience and knowledge available to us. He knows our athletic program, our coaches and our institution,” said Dean of Students Rudy Ehrenberg.

Today’s scheduled baseball game at Dickinson was postponed due to field conditions. The game has been rescheduled for Monday, April 21.

The Muhlenberg women’s tennis team swept both doubles and singles play to earn its first win of the spring season, 8-0 against Bryn Mawr.

Freshman Amy Schmidt won 6-0, 6-0 in two sets at second singles and along with parter Emily Oster, won at second doubles 8-4. Oster, who lost the first set at No. 4 singles 4-6 came back to win 6-4 in the second set and 10-3 in the third. Teammates Gena Ross, Mackenzie Parke and Sarah Niebler also came out victorious in both singles and doubles.
