Senior Gregg Burkhart pitched a complete-game four-hitter, striking out nine, and battery-mate A.J. Bettini drove in a career-high four runs as the Muhlenberg baseball team defeated Dickinson, 11-4, in its last Centennial Conference home game of the season.

Coming on the heels of Tuesday’s 23-2 victory in Carlisle, the win gave the Mules (15-10, 7-7) their fifth sweep of the Red Devils (10-17-1,
Joe Carlo
Carlo’s 2-for-4 raised his batting average to .355, the best among Mule regulars.
4-10) in the last six years. The 34 combined runs were the second-most ever scored by Muhlenberg in sweeping a CC opponent.

Burkhart took a one-hit shutout into the seventh and allowed no earned runs until the ninth in picking up his 11th career win. The nine strikeouts increased his career total to 198, putting him just two away from becoming the seventh CC pitcher to fan 200.

As they did on Tuesday, the Mules hit throughout the game, scored runs in six of their eight at-bats. Bettini drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second after a hit-and-run single by freshman Joe Carlo put runners on first and third.

In the third, a bunt single by senior Matthew Long loaded the bases with nobody out. One run scored on a double play, and a second came in on a double steal. Bettini scored on a throwing error in the fourth.

Muhlenberg again loaded the bases on a bunt single, this one by junior James Petersen, in the fifth. Carlo singled through the left side to knock in one run, and a second came in on Bettini’s forceout.

Already ahead 6-0, the Mules put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Bettini’s two-run triple to the left-center gap. Junior Chad Hegstrom followed with a run-scoring infield single, and senior C.J. Kessler knocked him in with a double.

Petersen’s double to right in the eighth brought home the final run.

Bettini is now hitting .465 in CC games and .333 overall. His triple was Muhlenberg’s school-record 23rd of the season.
