Mitchell Named Most Outstanding

The day before the start of final exams at Muhlenberg, the track and field teams earned high grades in their finals, both finishing second to host Haverford at the Centennial Conference Championships.

It is the first time both Mule teams finished in the top two outdoors; they accomplished the feat indoors in 2005. The women were in the top two for the third year in a row, and the men scored their best finish since landing in the runner-up spot in 2003.

As pictured below, Muhlenberg produced five gold-medal winners on the last day of competition, bringing its total for the meet to seven.

Sarah Mitchell

Senior Sarah Mitchell was named Outstanding Performer for field events after winning the javelin for the fourth year in a row. She is the seventh four-time outdoor champion in CC history. Mitchell’s winning throw of 137-5 hit the NCAA provisional standard.

Stuart Udis

Sophomore Stuart Udis overtook an Ursinus runner in the home stretch to win the 800 meters. Also a member of the winning 4x800 relay team, he was the lone Mule to bring home more than one gold.

Debra Crockett

Freshman Debra Crockett hit a mark of 11.76 meters in her first attempt in the shot put, and no one else threw better. Crockett is the first member of the Muhlenberg women’s team to win the CC shot put since 1994.

Senior Katie Hesselink-Hicks (above), who won her first CC gold medal at the indoor meet, repeated her championship outdoors, clearing an outdoor personal-best 5-1¾.

Freshman Brendan Kirk (right) became the Muhlenberg men’s program’s first conference champion in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. His championship time of 55.30 broke a 36-year-old school record.
