Junior Jill Friedman scored 12 points in only 17 minutes of action, leading a bench corps that sparked the Muhlenberg women’s basketball team to a 61-49 win over Alvernia in the first round of the Patient Care/Lady Monarch Classic.

The Mules (6-4) will play host King’s, a 78-52 winner over Susquehanna, in the championship game on Saturday at 4:00. That game will be broadcast over the internet by Power N Grace Sports, in cooperation with To access the broadcast, click here.

Muhlenberg struggled at the start of the game and trailed 12-3 after six minutes. Then the Mules called in the reserves and scored the next 13 points. They never trailed the rest of the game.

Friedman scored six of her points in the run and junior Erin DeVaney, another one of the reserves, added five, hitting a three-pointer with 10:19 to play in the half that gave Muhlenberg its first lead, at 14-12.

The Mule bench outscored their Crusader counterparts, 29-13. Junior Amber Nelson tied a season high with eight points, and sophomore Aril Bryant had two assists and two steals, one of which she converted into a full-court layup.

Ahead by only two points at halftime, Muhlenberg used its defensive pressure to opened the second half on a 17-4 run and extend its lead to 15. After allowing 12 points in the first six minutes, the Mules gave up only 15 in the next 22, and they forced a total of 32 turnovers.

Alvernia (6-3) cut a 20-point deficit to 10 in the final six minutes, but the Mules were able to hold on.

Alvernia was 24-6 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
