The Muhlenberg track and field teams opened their 2003 season at the Kutztown Invitational and had several noteworthy performances.

Senior Jason App finished third in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet even to miss his own school record by only 1¼. The feat was all the more

impressive because App has yet to practice the vault this season; his last vaults came last spring.

“I was surprised,” admitted App. “I didn’t expect to do that today, the first time out.”

Junior Brian Cash was the lone Mule to finish first in an event, winning the 1,000 meters at the Kutztown Invitational for the second straight year. Freshman Alex Hotz came in second in the same race.

The only school record was set by junior Diana Garretto of the women’s team, who placed third in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:18.28 – nearly 10 seconds better than the previous mark. Freshman Karen Mount also beat the previous school record, finishing fourth in 3:21.40.

Junior Josh Cohen and sophomores John Brodowski and Emily Yedowitz all placed in two events. Cohen was second in the 500 meters and fourth in the 55 meters; Brodowski was third in the 55 hurdles and fourth in the high jump; and Yedowitz was third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

The meet ended in a unique way. Muhlenberg and Kutztown, both without enough runners to field a complete women’s 4x400-meter relay team, instead ran a coed 4x400.
