Junior Susan Marchiano scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the first half as the Muhlenberg women’s basketball team captured third place in Springfield’s Naismith Classic with a 78-72 win over Misericordia.

The Mules (4-4) had their biggest first half of the season, scoring 51 points to open up a 17-point lead at the break, then had to hold off a late charge by the Cougars (2-5).

Muhlenberg forced 16 turnovers and held Misericordia to eight field goals in the first 20 minutes. The Mules scored 11 straight points after an early 4-4 tie and led by as many as 20 points in the first half.

The Cougars made their comeback primarily from the foul line, as Muhlenberg was whistled for 29 fouls in the game and Misericordia attempted 40 free throws. The score was 72-68 with 40 seconds left, but senior Randi Baran made four free throws and had a key steal down the stretch. Freshman Stephanie Coluccini, who scored a career-high nine points, sank two free throws with 2.7 seconds to play to seal the win.

Marchiano had four steals in addition to her 15 points. Junior Becky Richmond pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
