The Muhlenberg men’s basketball team suffered its second straight loss at the Muskingum Holiday Classic, dropping a 63-54 decision to Taylor (Ind.), the fourth-ranked team in NAIA Division II.

Playing much better than they did in losing the tournament opener to Muskingum, the Mules (3-4) were within striking distance the entire game. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, which ended with the Trojans (12-2) ahead, 33-30.

Muhlenberg took its final lead, at 40-38, on a three-point play by freshman Jeff Stewart with 15:59 left in the second half, but Taylor responded with a quick three-pointer to go back in front. The Mules trailed by one, 50-49, with 8:08 to play, before going scoreless for more than five minutes. The Trojans went on a 9-0 run during that cold spell to take the largest lead of the game, 59-49.

Stewart’s jumper and a three-pointer by junior Dennis Severino cut the deficit in half, but Taylor scored the final four points of the game on free throws.

Stewart led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Tom Scott, making his first career start, dished out a game-high four assists.

Muhlenberg has a break of 16 days before resuming the season with a makeup game at Washington on Jan. 5.
