Women’s lacrosse preview

Stephanie Carnevale Two Muhlenberg athletes were honored by the Centennial Conference for their performances over the weekend.

Senior Stephanie Carnevale was named women’s track athlete of the week, and junior Danny Usewick was selected as the first baseball player of the week of the 2014 season.

Carnevale won the 60-meter hurdles at Haverford’s Keogh Invitational, edging out fellow CC hurdler Victoria Goodenough of Ursinus by one one-hundredth of a second and tying for the fastest time in the CC this season (9.12). Carnevale also placed fifth in the 60 meters.

Danny Usewick Carnevale and Goodenough will go at it again this weekend at the CC Championships along with Gettysburg’s Katherine Cavanaugh in what promises to be one of the highlight events of the meet. The trio finished 1-2-3 at last year’s meet and are currently separated by a hundredth of a second on the CC performance list.

Carnevale’s season-best time of 8.22 in the 60 meters put her into a tie for fifth on the CC list.

Usewick hit .429, scored four runs and drove in three as the baseball team opened its season with a doubleheader sweep at Gallaudet.

His two-out RBI single brought in the Mules’ first run of the opening game and helped erase a 2-0 deficit. He later scored the tying run and set up an insurance run with a bunt in the seventh. In the second game, he went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and scored three runs.

Usewick also fielded nine chances without an error at second base and helped turn two double plays.
