Terry Kegel’s second goal of the game, 9:20 into the first overtime, gave the Haverford men’s soccer team a 2-1 win against Muhlenberg in a Centennial Conference matchup of regionally ranked teams.

The Mules (5-2, 2-1) entered the game ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, while the Fords (6-1, 3-0) were fifth. Muhlenberg played Gettysburg (No. 7) last Saturday and hosts Johns Hopkins (No. 3) this Saturday.

Haverford took the early lead, and Muhlenberg spent a good portion of the game trying to catch up. Finally, with 6:30 left to play, senior Chris Rowley took a shot from the left that the Haverford goalie dove to save. Sophomore Justin Marx slammed home the rebound for the equalizer.

The game-winning goal spoiled one of the Mules’ best efforts of the season. The loss was the first by Muhlenberg to Haverford since the 1992 postseason.

Freshman Maureen McLaughlin and sophomore Dena Simons both netted their first career goals as Muhlenberg (8-2, 3-0) cruised to a 4-1 Centennial Conference victory over Swarthmore (5-3, 0-3). The win was the Mules’ sixth straight overall and fifth straight over Swarthmore.

McLaughlin ended what had been a scoreless game when she found a loose ball with the Swarthmore goalie out of position and knocked it in with eight minutes left in the first half for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Dawn Iberer wasted no time increasing the Mules’ lead early in the second half when she scored her team-leading eight goal of the season on freshman Rebecca Armstrong’s team-leading fourth assist just 50 seconds into the half.

Simons pushed the lead to 3-0 when she scored off a nice pass from senior captain Jennie Vroman, who had missed seven games with an injury. Junior Jamie Gluck finished the Muhlenberg scoring on a breakaway goal, her third of the season, on an assist from sophomore Courtney Levine.

Junior goalie Kim Laurino played 75 minutes, not allowing a goal and pushing her scoreless streak to 446 minutes. “We played very well as a team tonight,” she said. “The defense has played great over this stretch, helping to make my job easier. It was also nice to see some different people score tonight because everyone contributes to the team’s success.”

Muhlenberg dominated the game, outshooting Swarthmore 27-6 and not allowing a legitimate scoring opportunity until the Garnet netted its lone goal with seven minutes to play in the game.
